Mike Dunn is Co –Founder and Managing Director of Leading Minds Academy®. He is also creator of the Ultimate Client Acquisition BlueprintTM.
His experience as an adviser, Australian Financial Services Licensee and owner of multiple businesses in financial services over a 35 year period, burnt into his psyche the importance of the need to drive new business revenue in concert with providing a great client service experience. That was his reason for the birthing of Leading Minds Academy® and it remains so to this day.
Today, Mike focuses his entrepreneurial interests on helping financial advisers and finance and mortgage brokers acquire new capabilities to deal with this dual need. His “deep in the trenches” experiences coupled with the learnings from an exceptional business partnership stretching over an 11 year period, provides him the lens to view business through a wider and more illuminating perspective.
He recalls starting out as a life insurance agent at a time when he had young family and a sizeable mortgage. Finances were tight and he struggled to find the ‘right’ people to talk with about protecting the dreams and aspirations they had for themselves and their families. He was given a rate book offering a very limited range of policy solutions and told to go talk with family and friends. Working on a commission only basis, a sense of urgency prevailed. It was to be his daily companion for years to come.
“In short, I was to go cold calling. It was a very tough call and if you’ve ever had to do it for an extended period of time, you'll know exactly what I mean. It's an unsophisticated form of prospecting but yet, if you survive the experience, valuable people skills can be learned. If you’re prepared for objections you can overcome them, you don’t lose balance. You gain perspective, maintain your stride and enthusiasm and most importantly, you protect your confidence”
Although times have certainly changed and technology has dramatically impacted the way we communicate, Mike so often still hears stories of advisers and brokers struggling to find the ‘right’ people to talk with. What hasn’t changed is that all business success comes from the person you’re trying to help, serve or sell something to. And it all starts with what that person wants. It’s about providing value to that person, the value of which can only be determined by that person.
